The Placer County District Attorney’s office has determined no crime was committed when an off-duty sheriff’s sergeant shot and injured a suspected burglar and auto thief near a Roseville park. According to a statement released by the Placer County District Attorney’s office, Placer County Sheriff’s sergeant Vaness Bogardus shot fugitive Sergey Pautov three times after Pautov refused to comply with orders to “get on the ground.” According to previous reports, Pautov, 22, of Rancho Cordova, was wanted for allegedly stealing an undisclosed amount of lottery tickets from an AM/PM store in Rocklin on May 29. Rocklin police pursued Pautov, who was driving a stolen vehicle, into Roseville city limits, according to the Roseville Police Department. Pautov abandoned the vehicle and was seen hopping over fences through the backyards of homes in the Stone Canyon Drive area of Roseville. Bogardus had been monitoring the call and was able to locate Pautov near Cambria Park in the 1700 block of Poppy Fields Drive. According to the statement, Bogardus made several attempts at ordering Pautov to the ground, and Pautov refused to comply. Pautov jumped onto a wall and was about to lower himself into the rear yard of a private residence when Bogardus fired three rounds, hitting Pautov twice in the left buttocks and once in the right hip, according to the statement. Pautov was taken into custody and transported by ambulance to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Pautov is currently charged with evading a peace officer, unlawfully taking and driving a motor vehicle, second-degree burglary, receiving stolen property and driving on a suspended license. He is due next in court at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 9 in Dept. 13 of the Placer County Superior Court in Auburn. The Placer County District Attorney’s office concluded that there is no evidence that Bogardus committed any crime during the apprehension of Pautov.
