Granite Bay High School opened defense of its Mark Macres basketball tournament championship by defeating Foothill 59-54 on Thursday night at Monterey Trail High in Elk Grove.

Robert Duncan scored 10 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter to help the Grizzlies hang on against the Mustangs. Six of those 10 came in succession – a shot off the glass to make it 54-49 with 1:51 left, two free throws after he went 1 on 4 on a break and drew a foul, and a layup on which he answered a Foothill three-pointer by going all the way for a layup, splitting two defenders for a 58-52 lead.

Joe Eyen made three three-pointers in the second quarter and four total for 12 points for the Grizzlies.

Granite Bay plays Rodriguez of Fairfield at 8:30 p.m. Friday. A win would put the Grizzlies in the championship game at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. A loss would mean a 6 p.m. tip Saturday in the third-place game.

Granite Bay returns home to play Vista del Lago on Monday.
