District 6 opponent challenges Gaines’ ballot designation

Gaines calls it a waste of court’s time

An opponent of current District 4 Assemblywoman Beth Gaines (R-Roseville) is challenging her ballot designation as a small business owner for the upcoming District 6 election. Andy Pugno, a republican from Folsom, petitioned the Sacramento County Superior Court to reject Gaines’ claimed designation on the grounds it does not meet Election Code requirements. In her last election, Gaines filed as a small businesswoman and worked at Point West Insurance in Sacramento. “My opponent, Beth Gaines, is in violation of California’s Elections Code by filing papers describing her principle occupation as ‘small business owner,’ when in fact the business she claims to own was created just two weeks before seeking re-election, and she cannot actively work in the business because she is not even yet licensed to do so,” Pugno said. Gaines said her opponent is pulling a political stunt and she is an owner of Gaines Insurance Agency. “Here we go again — another candidate who doesn't believe a woman can raise a family and own a business at the same time. I guess we should assume nothing less from an attorney candidate,” Gaines said. “I'm very proud of our small business and won't back down from this waste of the court's time for a political stunt.” Gaines currently represents Dist. 4, which includes Auburn. However, recent redistricting will move her seat to Dist. 6 starting Jan. 1, 2013. ~Sara Seyydin
