Who knew scarecrows — typically used to discourage birds from disturbing crops — could also help local children in need?

Denio’s Farmers Market and Swap Meet in Roseville decided the straw-stuffed decoy man could do just that and the community is invited to come out and take part in Denio’s inaugural Scarecrow Festival and Parade on Saturday, Oct. 20.

The free event benefits Roseville Firefighters Caring for Kids and Community. Denio’s will accept cash donations and new school supplies throughout Saturday’s event for Woodbridge Elementary School in Roseville. The money will go toward buying new clothes for low-income kids. The following day, many scarecrows will be auctioned off for the charity.

“We are excited to welcome in fall with this festive event,” said Denio’s owner Ken Denio, in a press release. “We look forward to seeing creative entries in both the scarecrow contest and costume parade, plus we hope to bring additional awareness and funds to support the important work that the Roseville Firefighters Caring for Kids and Community organization does in our area.”

Saturday’s event features pumpkin and treat bag decorating, carnival area, craft vendors, costume parade and Trick or Treating in the scarecrow area. Participants are invited to enter the scarecrow contest and come dressed for the costume parade.
