Customers charged multiple times at Raley’s and Bel-Air

Technical malfunction to blame
Raley’s and Bel Air are working to refund all duplicate transactions involving debit, credit, gift and EBT cards that took place last Sunday, as quickly as possible, according to Ashley Zepernick, a Raley’s spokeswoman. A technical malfunction was to blame for the situation that caused some customers to be charged multiple times for the same transaction. Linda Dickinson, of Loomis, realized her son’s account had been hit when she got an alert from their bank. “I check my son’s account and it notifies me when it goes low. It notified me because it’s a teen checking account, and it was double charged,” Dickinson said. “I wanted to make sure everybody knew what happened. In case they don’t track their checking account like I do.” Dickinson said she only sent her son to the store for a few things, but the double charge of $52 was still a lot for a college student’s account. She said as of Tuesday the money still had not been credited back to the account. “They told me it would be credited back within a day and it hasn’t been because I checked with Wells Fargo and I had them check in their history because sometimes the deposit just hasn’t posted,” Dickinson said. “I really do like Raley’s. I’m sure it was just a technical issue. I know it hasn’t been that long, it’s Tuesday. There is a lot of people where it’s getting close to where they have to pay their mortgages.” Zepernick said in a statement that because of the nature of the malfunction some of the duplicate charges may not have reflected on customers accounts until Tuesday. Raley’s has extended the hours of their service center and added additional staff to field customer calls. According to Zepernick, most of the accounts will be automatically refunded, though the processing time will vary from bank to bank. “We deeply apologize for the inconvenience this has caused and are committed to making this right with our customers,” Zepernick said.
