Every Thursday for about the last 20 years, Eugenie Rayback has been getting her hair done at Cape Cod Coiffures in Roseville.

The beauty salon has served women and men since 1963, says its current owner Annette Valdez, who took over the business Jan. 1. In fact, she’s pretty sure she’s only the third owner in the salon’s nearly 50-year history.

Rayback, 91, has lived in Roseville since 1941 and discovered the salon a couple decades ago, although she can’t remember the exact year now.

“It’s close (to my house),” Rayback said. “It’s always clean and the ladies are so friendly. I like the way they do my hair. I don’t know why I would have any complaints.”

Because of the salon’s longstanding clients, Valdez has made an effort to keep its roots intact, while giving the establishment an updated look.

She spent two weeks remodeling the salon’s interior, replacing the old salmon pink furniture with sleek black chairs. She took out a few old dryers and installed strip lighting, new mirrors and a black chandelier.

“I think it’s been neat (the customers) have been coming in so long and with the changes I tried to keep in mind the clientele,” Valdez said. “I wanted to make it modern and vintage.”

The previous owner had operated the salon since 1968 and retired in December. The majority of the clients have stayed on, Valdez said, and she’s working to bring in the younger clientele she previously served as a self-employed hairdresser.

On a recent Thursday morning, three ladies sat in the chairs getting their hair curled, dyed and cut. One husband waited, reading a magazine. The women laughed and talked with one another, as if they’d known each other for many years. And some had.

Customer Kay Fraser, of Granite Bay, entered the salon to the delight of her fellow clients, who affectionately refer to her as the “entertainer of the shop.” She’s been getting her hair cut at Cape Cod Coiffures for the past four years.

“Now, this is a swell salon,” Fraser said, admiring the new décor. “Words cannot express the change. This is uptown.”

Valdez says the women keep coming back to the business, in part, because of the friendships they’ve built.

“They all know each other,” she said. “It’s like ‘Cheers.’”

Client Barbara Wickstrom, of Roseville, has been going to the salon for the past decade. The Roseville native, now 77, used to shop at the J.C. Penney on Vernon Street downtown and she graduated from Roseville High School. She says the city has changed a lot through the years, but she appreciates what she considers progress, both outside in the larger community and inside her local salon.

“It’s not our little railroad town anymore,” Wickstrom said.
