Circus Vargas will be returning to Roseville next week for the first time in nearly six years. The “big top” will be at the Westfield Galleria at Roseville for nine shows Sept. 8-12. Circus Vargas, which nearly shut down for good about six years ago, was given new life and a new identity thanks to circus performers Nelson Tabares and Katya Quiroga-Tabares. The husband-and-wife team, who met while performing for Circus Vargas as flying trapeze artists in the 1980s, formed the company Tabares Entertainment and purchased the show in 2005. Since then, the show has taken on a new identity, visiting more than 40 cities each year primarily throughout California and Nevada. The new Circus Vargas seeks to take the audience on an artistic journey, showcasing the cultures of the world in a series of vignettes depicting the experiences, memories and visions of a traveling circus performer, according to Emily Lavender, marketing director for Circus Vargas. The new show is also animal-free, an artistic decision that was made to liven up the show with a big emphasis on audience participation, Lavender said. “There are lots of opportunities for kids and adults to come up on stage,” she said. “Kids love getting to laugh at their parents. Everyone that comes says it makes them feel like a kid again.” During each two-hour performance, aerialists, acrobats, comedians and more will transcend language, age and cultural barriers through the art of circus, according to a statement. Prior to every show, Circus Vargas host Jon Weiss, who competed as a clown in the fourth season of CBS’s “The Amazing Race,” will invite audience members of all ages to take a “center stage” look at life under the big top. Children and adults can go out into the center ring and learn how to perform circus tricks such as balancing, juggling and the Hula Hoop. “They all have a blast getting to be in the center ring where all the action takes place right after,” Lavender said.
