After some back-and-forth, Granite Bay High School’s madrigal choir will perform at Carnegie Hall after all. “Bottom line: students who are eligible and want to participate are going to Carnegie,” said Principal Mike McGuire. “We just have to raise the money somehow.” This decision was great news for parent Tammie Snyder who along with a fellow parent encouraged the principal to hold a meeting with all of the choir’s parents after the start of the school year. “I am thrilled,” she said. “There will need to be a lot of efforts on behalf of our students to fundraise. I know we can do it.” This spring, Granite Bay High School’s choir earned an invitation to perform at the prestigious Festival at Carnegie Hall in New York City. But concern over the limited concert dates and the high cost resulted in what Snyder says was a handful of parents deciding to decline the invite on behalf of the whole choir. This decision upset some parents who didn’t feel involved in the process. So McGuire and choir instructor April Bean agreed to reconsider. McGuire met with parents in late-August and explained that the opportunity to perform at Carnegie Hall is open to any Madrigal student from last year and this year, as long as costs are paid through a school account and an official school representative attends the trip. The students are scheduled to perform at Carnegie Hall on March 18. “I committed to support this trip regardless if one student participated or 13 participated,” McGuire said. Currently, 11 families have expressed a strong interest in their students having this experience, McGuire said. The cost will be about $2,000 per student, which includes air travel, ground transportation, hotel accommodations and meals. The school has begun to plan ways to raise the money.
