Buying on a budget
Yesterday’s fashionistas have become today’s frugalistas by forgoing major department stores and hunting down bargains at local retailers.
These days local families can’t afford to not stick to a budget and with the holidays just around the corner pinching pennies is even more difficult.Unless you know where to shop.
Kim Davis, a Rocklin resident, was initially drawn to Wise Buys in the Roseville Square Shopping Center for the $10 Christmas tree lot advertised on the front of the building. After choosing a tree, curiosity as to what other bargains lay in store got her browsing the aisles.
“I had been here once before but there really wasn’t much,” Davis said. “But we got such a good deal on our tree I gave it another shot and they have a much better selection. I’m very impressed.”
Davis said her family has been keeping to a budget since her husband lost his job but said the $10 and under prices at Wise Buys would be perfect for some of her Christmas shopping.
Even Davis’ daughter, Lexi walked the aisles of children’s toys and pointed out a few things that would make her wish list.
The bargain retailer carries a wide range of items from clothing and shoes, to household items and groceries many with name brands, all under $10.
Rocklin resident Alycia Ashmore stopped into Wise Buys and made a bee line to the girl’s shoes and dress section to find holiday outfits for her two young and growing daughters.
“This place has been amazing, we’ve found great deals,” Ashmore said. “At the beginning of school I bought 8 pairs of jeans for $40 and they were name brands that you’d find at Kohls, brand new.”
Besides buying gifts, the holidays can be expensive for hosts preparing their homes for the hoards of family members in need of a place to stay.
New Roseville furniture consignment store, Consign and Design carries gently used furniture in their boutique style store at prices that are gentle on the wallet.
A new, never before used cherry dinette set was priced at $400; compare that to a similar style at a bigger retailer priced at $740.
If it’s a guest room that needs furnishing, a king sized canopy bed will set you back a cool $400. Owner and former realtor, Becky Rose can help choose accompanying furniture and accessories and can use her experience in home staging to make a home office into a homey guest room.
Frances Anderson of Citrus Heights spent her day off browsing the little shops she normally breezes past, which brought her into Consign and Design. Anderson agreed that the consignment furniture boutique would be a fantastic place to shop for preparation for holiday guests but admitted it would be perfect anytime.
“I came in because I figured they would have great prices, and they do,” Anderson said.
