Big weekend for local softball teams in Preseason TOC

The Oakmont, Roseville and Woodcreek high school softball teams combined to go 11-3-1 in the Victory Preseason TOC last weekend.

Woodcreek (6-1 overall) was the runner-up in the Blue Bracket at Bartholomew Sports Park in Elk Grove. The Timberwolves defeated Pleasant Grove 5-2, Vacaville-Wood 7-0 and Lowry of Winnemucca, Nev., 18-1, in pool play. Woodcreek blanked Elk Grove 4-0 on a one-hit, eight-strikeout performance by Amanda Horbasch, then managed just one hit itself in a 5-0 loss to Napa-Vintage in the championship.

Woodcreek’s staff came out of the tournament with a 1.42 ERA. Horbasch combined with Amanda Modder on a two-hitter against Wood. Lexi Wilkerson scattered six hits against Pleasant Grove and teamed up with Modder on a two-hitter against Lowry.

Christal Vierra homered against Pleasant Grove, hit .400 in the tournament and is hitting .438 this season. Wilkerson had three triples and three RBI in the tournament and is hitting .389, and Frankie Orlando had a home run and a triple in the tournament and has a season average of .316.

Roseville (4-1-1) finished third in the Gold Bracket. The Tigers defeated El Camino 6-2, tied Reed of Sparks, Nev., 1-1 and hammered Placer 7-0 in pool play, then lost to eventual champion Whitney 2-1 in a 10-inning semifinal that saw Roseville escape two bases-loaded, none-out jams.

Delany DeMello had two 3-for-3 games and went 8 for 15 overall in the tournament, scoring eight runs. She’s hitting .556 this season.

Kayla Fields had a 3-1 record in the tournament and allowed four earned runs and 11 hits in 22 innings with 28 strikeouts. Sophomore Naomi Monahan went 6 for 15, and freshman Allison Manzo was 6 for 16. Manzo is hitting .476 this season and Monahan .471.

Oakmont (6-2) defeated Fairfield-Armijo 6-4 and Colfax 11-4 but then lost to Eureka 7-0 in the White Bracket. The Vikings finished by defeating Reno-McQueen 8-4 and Monterey Trail 12-2.
