Bella Vista stops Oakmont's baseball win streak at six
Oakmont High School rode a six-game winning streak into its Capital Valley Conference makeup game against Bella Vista on Thursday, but the visiting Broncos (13-4 overall, 5-1 CVC) scored in every inning but the fifth in an 8-4 victory over the Vikings.
Instead of having a lead of 1½ games over Bella Vista, Oakmont (13-5, 5-2) trailed the Broncos by a half-game heading into Friday’s contest at Casa Roble.
“We’re still eyeing the playoffs. That’s our goal,” Oakmont coach Dean Perkins said. “If we can get enough wins to win a championship, that’s good.”
Bella Vista totaled 14 hits, including four doubles and a triple, and Oakmont trailed 6-1 before scoring three runs in the fifth on Austin Call’s two-run single and Dalton DeVries’ RBI hit.
Bella Vista senior David Dellaserra struck out six in six innings, and left-hander Matt Gunter struck out the side in the seventh.
With rainout dates behind them, the Vikings return to a normal three-game schedule next week with two against Christian Brothers (9-7, 3-3) and one against Del Campo (7-10, 3-3) before hosting their annual golf tournament Friday and alumni baseball game April 28.
Oakmont defeated Rio Linda 15-4 on Tuesday and Casa Roble 8-5 on Wednesday. The Vikings totaled 27 hits, including five by Ryan Gearing.
Oakmont broke a 5-5 tie against Casa Roble in the bottom of the sixth. Logan Coggeshall hit a one-out double, Justin Garvin walked, and Robert Walton doubled in both. Jimmy Lunardelli followed with an RBI double.
Gearing struck out four in two scoreless innings of relief for the win.
