Baumgarten second at Pebble; Gearhart fifth in San Diego

Placer United soccer wins two titles in Prestige Cup

Brandon Baumgarten of Granite Bay and Champions Tour playing partner Brad Bryant teamed up to shoot 19-under-par 197 to place second last weekend in the Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach.

Baumgarten and Bryant combined for rounds of 8-under 64, 7-under 65 and 4-under 68 in the final round and held onto second place by one stroke.

Casie Cathrea of Livermore teamed up with Ben Crenshaw to shoot a 22-under 193 and record a four-stroke victory.

Clare Sorensen of Roseville, playing with Champions Tour pro Eduardo Romero, finished tied for 16th in the 78-player field at 12-under 204. Sorenson and Romero fired rounds of 67, 66 and 71.

In the south state, Lee Gearhart of Woodcreek High School tied for fifth against an international field of 104 at the fourth annual San Diego Junior Masters at Carlton Oaks Country Club.

Gearhart shot rounds of 1-under 71 and 2-over 74 for a 1-over 145 total, two strokes behind champion Daniel Chian of Covina.

Gearhart’s tournament included 24 pars, six birdies, five bogeys and one double bogey. In the second round, he birdied the longest hole on the course — the 613-yard, par-5 13th.

Two Placer United Soccer Club teams won championships last weekend at the 84-team Placer United Prestige Cup at Cherry Island Soccer Complex.

Placer United’s U17 California Development Academy and the U15 Elite each won their brackets. The U17 squad defeated Mt. Hamilton YSL Pac Brazil 94B 1-0 in the semifinals and won the title with a 2-1 victory over Juventus SC 94 Premier.

The U15 team outscored four bracket foes 12-1 and then defeated Casa Boca ’96 3-0 for the crown.

Also, Placer United’s U11 Elite placed second, winning its bracket with a 3-0 record before losing to the Inter Rage Academy Strikers 2-0 in the final; and Placer U13 Elite went 2-1 in its bracket and lost to Juventus SC Aztecs Premier 4-1 in the semifinals.
