The kids stretched up out of their seats, craning their necks to watch as the special guests walked toward their classroom. Three fourth grade classes at Blue Oaks Elementary School in Roseville were visited Thursday by members of William Jessup University’s men’s basketball team. “They’re so big,” said student Morgan Lucie. “They’re bigger than us.” The Warriors recited Shel Silverstein poems to the students as part of an annual national literacy program sponsored by the National Association of Basketball Coaches to motivate and encourage kids to read for enjoyment as a lifelong practice. “The kids just get so excited,” said teacher Nicole Bussell. “They get to see that even college basketball players love to read.” Her husband, Jeff Bussell, is an assistant coach of Jessup’s basketball team. Head coach Aaron Muhic said throughout the 12 years he’s coached at the college, his teams make helping out the larger community a regular endeavor. “To serve, that’s what our school is all about,” he said. ~ Sena Christian
