Area teams look to rebound in SFL dual meets
Roseville, Woodcreek and Granite Bay high schools head into the third round of Sierra Foothill League dual meets coming off losses.
On Jan. 9, host Granite Bay fell to Nevada Union 42-36, host Woodcreek dropped a 44-15 match to Del Oro, and Roseville lost at Rocklin 51-30.
Granite Bay registered four pins — by Sean Brown at 138 pounds in the third round, Alex Cooney (145) in the first round, David Miller (170) in the first round and Aaron Wiese (220) in the second round.
Granite Bay also scored pins in the only six matches wrestled in the JV dual. Austin Moore won via fall, as did Alex Meza (106), Keaton Donald (120), Parker Mortensen (138), Raphael Carpenter (145) and Carlton Modin (160).
Woodcreek opened with three victories against Del Oro, the reigning SFL champion, as Mitchell Houston (195), Connor Vargas (220) and Dominic Balmer (285) won by decision. Junior James Gomez (126) had a pin for the Timberwolves’ only other win.
“We battled tough and competed well, but we just aren’t there yet,” Woodcreek coach Doug Mason said. “We will get better, and we will be better the next time we meet.”
Roseville recorded three pins in its dual against Rocklin — by Noah Honeycutt (126) in the second period, Jon Maroon (138) in the first period and Austin Ash (170) in the second period.
Maroon and Ash also won their weight classes at the Mark Fuller Tournament in Lincoln. Maroon wrestled at 145 pounds and Ash at 160. Logan Ash placed second at 120.
Also, Zack Farr (113) placed fourth, Honeycutt (132) and Austin Dirks (145) were fifth, and Brayden Leach (132) took sixth.
SFL standings: Del Oro 2-0, Nevada Union 2-0, Woodcreek 1-1, Rocklin 1-1, Granite Bay 0-2, Roseville 0-2.
Wednesday’s schedule (varsity starts at 7 p.m.): Nevada Union at Woodcreek, Roseville at Del Oro, Granite Bay at Rocklin.
