Another sweep moves Granite Bay volleyball to 8-0 in SFL

Granite Bay High School’s boys volleyball team improved to 8-0 in the Sierra Foothill League with a 3-0 sweep of visiting Del Oro on Thursday night.

Carson Odegard and Alec Naki had 10 kills each for the Grizzlies (26-6 overall) in their 25-14, 25-15, 25-12 victory. Matt Austin and Austin Downs each had five kills and two blocks, and Bryan Berry had a team-high three blocks. Travis Vincenzini led Granite Bay with six digs.

Nevada Union 3, Roseville 0 — Josh Frost had 18 kills, but the host Tigers (16-9, 2-6) lost to the Miners 25-15, 27-25, 27-25.

Connor Miller had seven kills for Roseville. Christian Habeil had a team-high 25 assists, and Andrei Midrigan had four digs.

Roseville was swept at Rocklin 25-13, 25-18, 25-23 on Tuesday. Miller had five kills, four blocks and three aces for the Tigers, and Frost and Josh Lewis had five kills each.

Stephen Morin’s seven-point service run gave Roseville an 18-13 lead in the third set.


Roseville splits two — The Tigers defeated Granite Bay 3-0 on a three-hitter by Kayla Fields and followed with a 3-1 loss to Woodcreek on Tuesday.

Roseville scored all three runs in the fifth against Granite Bay. Naomi Monahan singled in one run, and Taylor McDowell singled in two.

Valley Christian wins three — The Lady Lions recorded three blowouts: 16-3 over Elk Grove-Lutheran and 10-0 and 20-0 over New Life Christian in a doubleheader.

Erin Patterson went a combined 9 for 10 with two home runs, two triples, a double and four RBI. Katie Urban was 8 for 10 with five doubles and a triple. She also had 12 strikeouts in 12 innings pitched over two games.

Sarah Finnell had a triple and two doubles among her five hits, Cassidy Bowen was 5 for 8 with a homer, double and five RBI while earning her first pitching victory, Irene Niulala had a homer, two doubles, a single and three RBI, and Hannah Heckman went 3 for 4.

Boys lacrosse

Granite Bay moves into first — The Grizzlies held host Jesuit scoreless in the fourth period and took over first place in the Sacramento Valley Lacrosse Conference with a 9-6 victory. Jack Hanley and Zack Burger scored four goals apiece for Granite Bay.

The Grizzlies also defeated Stockton-St. Mary’s 17-7, as 13 players scored. Nate Gruen led Granite Bay with five goals. Grant Caraway and Will Harkin each scored four, Zach Burger and Nathan Wiley had three apiece, and Brandon Hughes and Jake Mackall scored two apiece.

Senior Greg Marks and sophomore Michael Geraghty helped Granite Bay control play. The Grizzlies won 22 of 28 face-offs and had 48 ground-ball pickups.

JV boys volleyball

Granite Bay sweeps two — The Grizzlies defeated Woodcreek 25-13, 25-10 on Tuesday and Del Oro 25-13, 25-20 on Thursday.

John Hayes had three kills in the second set against Woodcreek and three kills in the first set against Del Oro. Drew Toso helped the Grizzlies finish Del Oro with a seven-point service run in the second set.

Nevada Union 2, Roseville 0 — The Tigers (5-9, 1-7) fell to the Miners 25-17, 25-15. Roseville also lost to Rocklin 27-25, 25-16 on Tuesday.

JV boys lacrosse

Granite Bay wins two — The Grizzlies blew out Jesuit 14-0 and Stockton-St. Mary’s 14-2. Defenders Will Stabbert, Nick Gainer and Chad Blakeman led the Grizzlies to a shutout of the Marauders. Dakota Burley scored four goals, Dayton Allegra and Felipe Zugarra scored two each, and Austin Allegra won 6 of 9 face-offs.

Granite Bay scored the last 12 goals in its game against St. Mary’s. Stabbert, Gainer, Andy Moudakis and Owen McNiff each earned five loose-ball pickups.
Dayton Allegra scored six goals, and McNiff and Ben Smith each had a hat trick. Austin Allegra and Luke Chirbas combined to win 13 of 16 draws.
