Summer is supposed to mean fun, but for the Del Oro football team, May and June added up to a lot of hard work in preparation for the 2018 football campaign.
“We had a very good summer,” said Del Oro coach Jeff Walters, who is about to begin his second year at the reins of the Golden Eagles. “The workouts have been great.”
Del Oro, which will begin conditioning drills next week in anticipation of the season-opener Aug. 17 at Amador Valley, participated in both individual practices and in a series of 7-on-7 passing league match-ups.
“We competed very well and improved in the 7-on-7s,” said Walters. “It was a very positive and upbeat summer as far as our workouts and competitions went.”
The Golden Eagles were 8-6 a year ago and reached the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division II Championship game for the third straight season.
Del Oro returns some key players in senior quarterback Carson Jarratt (1,634 yards passing, 15 TD passes), two-way All-League standout Dawson Hurst and a trio of fine receivers in Jonny Guzman, Josh Moore and Matt Smart.
On the defensive side of the ball, Tatuo Martinson (6-foot-2, 255 pounds), Wyatt Berry (6-2, 265), Carson Westlake (6-0, 170) and Charlie Rogers (6-2, 220) all return.
Del Oro’s showing in its summer drills has Walters and the Golden Eagle coaching staff filled with optimism.
“I think there’s a lot excitement and optimism about the upcoming year,” said Walters. “We should have another exciting season with a typical meat grinder of a schedule. I thought the team gelled real well this summer. They’re excited for kickoff.”
