The Barrel Bonspeil comes to Roseville, March 24-26
Wine Country Curling Club and Placer Valley Tourism will host a springtime bonspiel at Skatetown Ice Arena in Roseville this weekend, March 24-26.
WCCC decided to add the Barrel Bonspiel tournament in light of its success with "The Crush," its signature bonspiel held over Labor Day Weekend.
“We had such a great time hosting The Crush on Labor Day that we decided to host another bonspiel in March,” WCCC President Katie Feldman said. “Curling in California is growing so much, and we're proud to be the first club to now host two bonspiels in a year.”
For those wondering what curling is, a news release from Placer Valley Tourism put it this way: think of a large shuffleboard on ice where participants slide 42-pound curling stones down a long sheet of ice to land in the target range. The course is 150 feet long and 15 feet wide, with a large bullseye at one end. Points in curling are awarded to the team whose stones land closest the ‘house,’ or bullseye. Each team rotates throws and tries to knock the other team’s stones away from the center of the house.
WCCC offers learn-to-curl clinics frequently an invites anyone interested to attend a session.
Fans are also welcome to watch the festivities at the end of the month. The Barrel Bonspiel will begin at 7 a.m. Friday, March 24 and continue through Saturday, March 25 with the finals beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 26.
