Ettore’s Bakery and Café opens in Roseville

A name synonymous with sweets

The start of Ettore’s
Ettore Ravazzolo was born in a small town near Zurich, Switzerland. His Italian grandfather “Nono,” who owned a restaurant, was Ettore’s inspiration.

By the time he was 20 years old, Ettore was a professional Swiss pastry chef. When he had finished his Swiss military training, Ettore worked as a chef cooking for soldiers in the Alps.

He immigrated to America a few years later in 1977. When he arrived, he had $350 in his pocket – half of which he loaned to a friend – and could not speak English. But he was determined and hard-working, and soon Ettore began working at a pastry chef in hotels and restaurants across the United States.

Ettore settled in Sacramento at Viva Croissant on Fair Oaks Boulevard and on March 1, 1985, Ettore bought the bakery and changed the name to what it is known as today: Ettore’s European Bakery and Café.

Ettore’s Bakery and Café first opened in Sacramento in 1985 and is known by many for its decadent, artistic cakes and European-style sweets. Now the bakery has opened a second location right around the corner on North Sunrise Avenue in Roseville.

After years of planning and preparation, Ettore’s opened in Roseville in October of last year and had a ribbon-cutting ceremony Jan. 18 with the Roseville Chamber of Commerce. What make Ettore’s an “upper crust” bakery, according to Ettore’s Marketing Manager Jack Lyons, is that everything is made from scratch on a daily basis.

“We are also one of the only bakeries that uses 100 percent real butter in every item that we make,” Lyons said. “While this may seem like an insignificant detail, it increases the taste and overall quality of everything we produce.”

While Lyons is approaching his fourth year working at Ettore’s, he said some employees have been with the bakery and café for up to 25 years.


A longtime customer favorite is the fruit basket cake, Lyons said. The cake is made of light layers of vanilla sponge cake with alternating layers of fresh strawberries and pineapple, frosted with both white chocolate mousse and whipped cream.

The Champagne cake is a soaked sponge cake filled with fresh strawberries and iced with white chocolate mousse. The chocolate mousse cake is every chocolate-lover’s dream: A three-layer chocolate sponge cake filled with a Swiss chocolate mousse with chocolate sprinkles lining the edges and topped with generous portions of shaved chocolate. A European favorite, the princess torte, has a vanilla sponge cake base and is covered with a thin layer of raspberry preserves and pastry cream. Piled on top is a mound of fluffy whipped cream giving it a rounded shape. Smooth, almond marzipan drapes the entire torte, which is hand-decorated with a sugar flower and chocolate. Customers can choose from three colors: pink, light green or almond. All cakes costs $28.75 to $100.

In addition to the multitude of cakes offered at this charming bakery are a variety of cookies, pies, mini desserts and breakfast pastries. Many of the cookies have unusual names like “Swissies” or “cheese pockets.”

The Rugulaches are bite-sized crescent-shaped treats, rolled from a rich cream cheese dough and filled with cinnamon, sugar, poppy seeds and nuts.

Other treats will make choosing just one the most difficult decision of your day. Are you in the mood for a tart or a cake cup? Or perhaps you want to try a mini cannoli or petit four?

“With so many options, there’s something for everyone at Ettore’s,” Lyons said.


“Ettore’s is a name that is synonymous for bakery goods and sweets,” Lyons said. “But we are also home to an award-winning cafe.”

Ettore’s Niman Ranch flame grilled burger was voted “the Best in Burger” in the Sacramento Burger Battle in 2013. At the café, guests can watch as their made-to-order pizza is cooked in a large brick oven. The café offers breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner, all with a European twist. Beer and wine is also available for purchase alongside a handcrafted sandwich of freshly baked focaccia bread or saffron risotto with sundried tomatoes and fresh herbs.

In addition to its two locations, the delicious creations from Ettore’s kitchen can be found at many Nugget Markets and is available for express catering or weddings. Bringing this European bakery and café to Roseville was a sweet gift to the city and Placer County residents.

“We cannot wait to make many memories in our new home,” Lyons said.
