Independence High School senior Austin Murray’s hard work has paid off. He recently earned a $1,000 scholarship, and is one of 29 Roseville-area seniors who received scholarships in the name of Sylvia Besana and Bill Santucci to pay toward their first year of college. The combined scholarships total $28,000. Santucci was a longtime public servant who served as a Roseville councilman and mayor for two terms. He was involved with several local commissions and later became a Placer County supervisor. He died of a heart attack in 2008. “Bill was the consummate public servant and always had the best interests of Roseville citizens in his heart,” said former Roseville Mayor Jim Gray, in a press release. Besana was a teacher and vice principal at Roseville High School who participated in several volunteer groups before losing her battle with cancer in 2008. A Roseville park is named in her honor. Murray received the Bill Santucci Scholarship, which required a minimum 3.0 grade point average. The honor student served as Independence High School’s student body president for two years and attended classes at Sierra College. ~ Sena Christian ---------- Bill Santucci Scholarship winners Granite Bay High School Jonathan Davis Stephayne Gascon Kevin Hollingshead Matthew Kasner Katharine Leigh Ashwin Subramanian Independence High School Austin Murray Oakmont High School Minnaal Ali Britney Carino Jeremiah Hill Samantha McCarthy Kelsea Murchison Jessica Scott Andrew Wixon Roseville High School Alyssa Gadberry Brianna Kidwell Alexandria Lee Jessica Mah Jessica Malanco Evan Nazaroff Jamie Nurenberg Alana Velasquez Woodcreek High School Brittany Attwood Brandon Fields Jeanine Krueger Michael Rose Thalia Torres Sylvia Besana Community Volunteer Award Roseville High School Allison Markwart Woodcreek High School Kathryn Lewis
