12 Days of Giving: Salvation Army Roseville rings in the season of givingBy: Michelle Carl, Managing Editor
During the 12 Days of Giving from Nov. 23-Dec. 4, the Press Tribune will feature a new nonprofit online every day and share how you can help its mission.
It’s one of the most familiar symbols of giving this time of year: The Salvation Army bell ringers collecting donations in red kettles. Salvation Army will have bell ringers out at 30 sites in south Placer this year – and they need help, said Lt. John Morrow with the Roseville Salvation Army.
“We need wonderful-pleasant-friendly people to be willing to volunteer to ring bells with The Salvation Army,” he said. “It is fun! And the proceeds go back into the community through our programs.”
Those programs include hot showers and meals for the homeless, food boxes for lower income families and rental and utility assistance for those struggling to pay the bills. During the holidays, Salvation Army Roseville ratchets the giving up a notch. On Thursday, the Army held a Thanksgiving dinner, providing 500 hot dishes to homeless and lower income families. Christmas food boxes and toys will be distributed to families as that holiday draws near.
“I believe that we are making memories for helping people that will last a lifetime,” Morrow said. “I have spoken to many people who have shared testimonies with me about how when they were children, they didn't have a lot of money, but they are forever appreciative that The Salvation Army was there for them when they needed them the most.”
