Families experiencing stress and hardship can sometimes spiral into situations where children are traumatized on physical, mental and psychological levels. Roseville’s nonprofit Kids First is dedicated to preventing such tragedies, working to stop the neglect, abuse and exploitation of local children. Kids First does this outreach, prevention and education — searching for ways to partner with the community to ensure at-risk kids have safe, stable homes. Some of Kids First’s new services include parent-child interactive therapy, family counseling, a parents-as-teachers program and a kinship program, which helps provide services to family members raising children who have been removed from another family member’s home.

“Families of all socio-economic backgrounds come to Kids First,” said Lisa Velarde, chief executive director. “Some come from low-income neighborhoods, but some come from the complete opposite walk of life. We have all different types of people who come through our doors for services.”
