Grizzlies place fourth at girls state golf tournamentBy: Nick Pecoraro
RIVERSIDE– The Granite Bay girls golf team ended its impressive run to the CIF State Championship Wednesday morning with a fourth-place finish at Victoria Golf Club in Riverside.
The Grizzlies shot a collective 393 (33-over-par) behind state champions Troy (22-over), runner-up Dougherty Valley (24-over) and third-place Diamond Bar (28-over).
Hailey Reitz was 2-under-par through 13 holes for the individual lead, but four straight bogeys from holes 14-17, including a triple bogey on the final hole, dropped her out of contention. Rietz finished at 5-over-par 77 for 17th place on the day.
Vanessa Richani, a two-time Section individual champion, finished tied with Rietz at 5-over. Hannah Harrison, this year’s D-I individual Section Masters champion, carted a 6-over-par 78.
Yewon Jang shot 40s on both front and back nines, and Yena Jang, who came within a playoff hole of winning the NorCal individual championship last week, shot a 9-over-par 81 for the Grizzlies.
Mater Dei’s Brianna Navarrosa’s 4-under-par 68 won the individual leaderboard after compiling eight birdies to edge out Irvington’s Mika Jin and South Hills’ Alexa Melton, who each shot 2-under.
The Grizzlies earned a spot in the six-team state championship field after winning the Division I Sac-Joaquin Section title for the fourth straight year, a run that has only been outdone by St. Francis. Granite Bay also matched its fourth consecutive win at the Section Masters tournament.
The Grizzlies fell just two strokes behind Dougherty Valley in the NorCal tournament, which fed into Wednesday’s state championship field.
