William Jessup University hosts its fourth annual Veterans Honor Run at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, paying homage to fallen veteran Victor Dew of Granite Bay.

Proceeds from the run benefit William Jessup’s L.Cpl. Victor Dew Endowment Fund, helping veterans graduate debt-free from the Rocklin university.

Tragically, Dew was killed while serving as an infantryman in the United States Marine Corps on Oct. 12, 2010. Dew was among four Marines killed when a roadside bomb exploded alongside their vehicle in southern Afghanistan near the Pakistani border.

The Victor Dew Endowment Fund allows the university to alleviate any financial burden William Jessup University veteran families might incur so they can pursue their dreams, obtain their education and serve with distinction in their communities. Every dollar donated is directly supporting veterans and Gold Star Families.

“We want to do everything we can to assist our veteran students and Gold Star Families or those who have lost a loved one in military service,” said Jessup’s senior development director David Pineschi. “There is a common misconception that all educational costs are covered for veterans, which simply is not true. Our endowment will help to bridge that gap, making veterans access to higher education debt-free.”

Beginning at 8:10 a.m. Saturday, the pre-race program features a few words from Dew’s mother and Gold Star mom, Patty Schumacher. A balloon release is also planned to honor Dew. In addition, the Sacramento Sea Cadets will demonstrate the presentation of colors. Student veteran and vice president of the student-led veterans club, Clarence Douglas, will also speak about his experience at Jessup.

The 5K starts promptly by the Warrior soccer field located near Crossroads Café. The course will take runners around the Sunset Residence Hall along University Avenue, across Wildcat Boulevard with a homestretch onto trails located on Jessup’s 125-acre campus. KLOVE and Air1 radio will inspire runners at the second-mile marker. Participants receive a Victor Dew 5K T-shirt, snacks and water in addition to a gift card from event sponsor Chick-fil-A.
