With just a little over a week left in the regular season, area teams find themselves in intriguing matchups with postseason implications. Here’s a look at the current playoff picture.
The battle for the Sierra Foothill League crown seems to be lining up for a three-way race between Whitney, Oak Ridge and Granite Bay. Oak Ridge and Granite Bay currently sit tied for first place with 4-1-2 records, with the Trojans owning the tiebreaker. Whitney (3-1-3), however, could sneak into first place if it can win the next two games over the Trojans and Grizzlies.
With Ponderosa having a perfect 6-0-0 record in league play, the Bruins look like a shoe in fit to win the Foothill Valley League. However, the remaining teams will be battling for postseason position and key games down the stretch will decide who stays home and who moves on to the playoffs. Oakmont and Placer both picked up blowout wins Monday night to stay in second and third place, respectively, with identical 4-2-1 league records. Lincoln (4-3-0) sits on the outside looking in currently by half a game. The most important game may occur Wednesday night when Oakmont and Placer face off. With the teams drawing the first match they played just a few weeks ago, the winner could determine be a big piece in finishing the playoff puzzle.
With Roseville (6-0-2) leading the Capital Valley Conference by games with four to go, the Tigers have put themselves in position to win the league title for the first time since 2013 when they were in the SFL. Their cross-town rival, Woodcreek, has put itself in a tougher spot. With the CVC taking the top four teams in the standings, the Timberwolves may find themselves on the outside looking in. With Tuesday night’s loss to Antelope, Woodcreek (4-5-1) is two games out of the last spot with two games to go. Playoff hopes may be on life support for the Lady Timberwolves.
The SFL boys soccer race is wide open. With four games to go, Oak Ridge, Folsom, Whitney and Granite Bay are all within a game of each other and any of them could wind up being the league champion when it’s all said and done. Oak Ridge holds a slim half-game lead over Whitney and Folsom, who are tied for second place while Granite Bay sits a game back of Oak Ridge for first place. Whitney took on Oak Ridge Wednesday in a game with big implications on the league title.
Oakmont (4-0-3) currently sits in first place in the FVL and own the tiebreaker over Ponderosa, who is a game back in the loss column. Lincoln (3-1-3) controls the last playoff spot and third place over Placer by one game. Placer (3-2-2) has a chance to gain some ground when they take on Oakmont Thursday. If the Vikings are able to come out of that game on top, they can seal the league title with a win over Ponderosa in the season finale.
With Bella Vista suffering its only league loss at the hands of Woodcreek and the Tigers knocking off the Timberwolves, the CVC race just got a lot more interesting. Woodcreek (8-2-0) and Roseville (7-2-0) sit second and third, respectively, in league. If Roseville manages to knock off Bella Vista (8-1-0) next week, we could be looking at a three-way tie for first place heading into the final game of the regular season. Roseville, Woodcreek and Bella Vista may find themselves all in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division II bracket and could very well face each other once again in the postseason.
