Tigers finish second at Sutter Invite
SUTTER– Roseville’s wrestling team took second place at the Sutter Lions Club Varsity Invitational last weekend. With 185 team points, the Tigers were behind only host Sutter, who had 208.5.
Eric Dutka rode four wins in the 160-pound bracket to earn gold. Dutka scored a 2 minute, 40 second pin in his first bout before a 12-8 win in the quarterfinals and a 4-3 semifinal decision. Dutka rolled over Las Plumas’ Shawn Pagenkopp in the finals via 8-1 decision.
Teammate Elijah Boyd matched a gold medal effort at the 170 level, scoring two pins en route to a 13-2 major decision over Hughson’s Garrett Hicks in the finals.
At 195, Ethan Bandy placed second overall, going 2-1 in the tourney. Garrett Solso also took second place, losing a narrow 1-0 decision to Jose Sanchez of Maria Carillo High in the 113 finals. Joshua Provins went 3-1 with two falls at 138 for a third runner-up finish for the Tigers.
Breyson Gonzalez (106) finished third. He defeated Cody Roosevelt of River City by major decision, 14-3, before being upset by Carson City’s Ariel Vega, 4-2. Gonzalez rounded out the third-place bout with a 2-1 decision over Giovanni Bertolino of Willits High.
Dominic Jordan (132) and Mark Bonar (145) took fourth overall in their respective classes.
Tiger teammates Cole Babbini and Alexander Alcautar battled it out for fifth place in the 126 bracket. Babbini won by pinfall at the 4:36 mark.
Eddie Valdez took sixth at 182, Christopher Cantwell took sixth at 285 and Aidan Chang took eighth place in the 120 division for Roseville.
Tim Brown Memorial
Some of the Sac-Joaquin Section’s best took to the mats at Cal Expo for the 23rd annual Tim Brown Memorial.
Spanish Springs of Nevada took first place overall, narrowly edging out Oakdale 174-171.5. Gold Country area teams Vista del Lago placed fourth, Folsom fifth, Oakmont eighth, Granite Bay 13th, Oak Ridge 17th, Whitney 18th, Rocklin 22nd, Lincoln 34th, Woodcreek 36th and Bear River 75th.
Notable individual placers included Folsom senior Kyle Richards, who was the 223-pound champion, Oakmont freshman Danny Myles (109) and sophomore Sean Myles (185), Whitney sophomore Isaiah Schannep (123), Oak Ridge senior Preston Cobabe (223) and Vista senior Justin Ramos (285), who all were runners up in their respective weight classes.
Lucas Cook of Lincoln (285), Andrew Reese of Vista (173), Caiden Cohen (148) and Justin Eldridge (135) of Folsom, and Kai Niimi of Granite Bay (123) all had third-place finishes.
